In early 2013, Senior Constable Larissa Dent had an unexpected rupture in her large bowel which resulted in an emergency resection. Due to complications and numerous hospital admissions, Larissa then underwent a loop ileostomy in February 2017. This meant that the end of Larissa’s small intestine was brought to the surface of her stomach which would empty into a stoma pouch. The large intestine was there, but disconnected. Larissa’s stoma sits a lot higher than normal and above her belt line, which has allowed her to continue to work operationally. Then in February 2018 and due to further complications, Larissa had to have her entire large intestine removed.
Since that time, Larissa has had several major surgeries to remove multiple organs and has had many complications. Most recently, Larissa had a device inserted in her back for pain management. Her bladder requires catheterisation as it no longer works properly. Regardless of all of this, Larissa has performed her duties with motivation and enthusiasm, and has served much of her service at remote locations such as Woorabinda, Normanton and Thargomindah. Prior to 2013, Larissa also served as a Lieutenant in the Australian Army Reserve, but had to withdraw due to her health.
Larissa’s husband Julian also served in the Australian Army Reserve which included an overseas deployment. In June 2019, Julian became sick and was diagnosed with bladder cancer, requiring regular treatment in Brisbane. Julian is having a number of complications including a deep vein thrombosis and an arterial aneurysm. He now also has lesions on his lungs requiring investigation.
Larissa and Julian recently relocated from Thargomindah to South Kolan to be closer to medical treatment. They have now been dealt another blow with Larissa recently undergoing major surgery after also becoming ill from a mass in her abdomen. Julian has now put his treatment on hold temporarily to support Larissa through her surgery and recovery.
Julian’s medical condition has prevented him from working for some time. Julian and Larissa’s combined medical expenses have resulted in enormous financial strain with only one income. Prior to relocating from Thargomindah, Larissa and Julian have travelled to and from Brisbane numerous times which is a 10 hour drive or 5 hour flight.
Larissa and Julian need our help now more than ever, to assist with their daily living expenses and combined medical treatment. Any amount you can spare to support this worthy cause would be sincerely appreciated.
